Venture Crew 222 |
The President is the primary leader of the Crew. They are selected by the Crew Members as the best person to lead and represent them. Being President carries honor and privilege, but it also requires hard work, responsibility and dedication. The President shares the responsibility of leading the Crew with the other elected Officers, working together to develop a leadership team. When the President delegates specific responsibilities to other officers and members, it is the Presidents responsibility, with the support of the Advisor , to encourage and follow up to be sure that their jobs have been carried out. The President provides leadership at all Crew meetings and activities, and conducts monthly officers meetings in consultation with the Advisors. Communication with the Advisors, officers and Crew members is essential. The President represents the Crew members to the Chartered Organization and to the BSA Council through its' Teen Leaders' Council. The Teen Leaders' Council is an association of crew officers and other teen leaders in the area. The president should know the Crew members' needs and desires so they can adequately represent the Crew at these meetings. The President sets an example for members by following the rules and standards of the Crew. The President may counsel individual Crew members who have problems, questions, or concerns. The President should listen to what they say and help them find answers that are best for the Crew. With the Advisor , the President should direct the planning of the Crew program and use the Venturer Handbook and Venturing Leader Manual to plan meetings and activities. The Crew President appoints Crew members to serve as activity chairs. With the Advisor's help, the President selects members who are suited to the activity and need leadership experience. Coaching and follow-up are necessary to be sure the understand what to do. Don't hesitate to ask the Advisor for advice and help. That is the Advisor's responsibility - to be the President's counselor and coach. It is important that the President work through, not around, the Advisor , who is held responsible by the Crew's Chartered Organization and Venturing for the programs and actions of the Crew. The President's duty is exciting, important and challenging. The President is the one person who can really make the difference in how successful the Crew really is. Read the Venturing Leader Manual carefully, and attend BSA Council meetings and conferences to learn from other crew presidents. Source: Venturer Handbook, Boy Scouts of America, 1999. |
